Project Background
Introduction
Premarital checkup aims at helping about-to-wed couples to gain a better understanding the health conditions of themselves and their partner, as well as conducting an early detection of diseases that would have serious effect on the next generation. Premarital checkup is encouraged because only patients with major genetic diseases will have serious symptoms, while patients with minor genetic diseases might not have obvious symptoms, thus cannot be identified from appearance.
Take thalassemia, one of the genetic diseases which have great concern to the general public, as an example. If both parents have the same type of thalassemia minor, they will have a chance to give birth to a thalassemia major, which results in frequent blood transfusions and may not survive a normal lifespan of the offspring.
In this project, simulations regarding the population genetics is conducted, which the objective to proof the importance of premarital checkup.
